Kaikoura Rebuild - Geovert Ground Engineering

In 2016 a catastrophic earthquake struck the Kaikoura region in NZ, causing hundreds of landslides, cutting off the road and rail transport corridor to the town of Kaikoura and its rural communities, completely isolating the residents.

Due to the unprecedented scale of slope remediation required, Geovert worked closely with the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) alliance in the design process as well as coordination and onboarding of multiple competitors from the New Zealand and Australian market.

Harnessing our international supply chain Geovert organised all materials required for the geotechnical contractors including anchors, soil nails, self-drilling anchors, rockfall barriers, debris flow barrier and high tensile slope stabilisation mesh. Under time pressure, this created a logistical challenge and one we managed with assurance.

Geovert’s involvement with this vital, time-critical project at Kaikoura raised the bar for rockfall best practice in New Zealand. Our ability to develop design solutions, share our knowledge and expertise and adapt to every challenge was recognised and praised by our partners. It was an astounding effort by all involved in this award-winning project. In a high risk and challenging environment our commitment to safety is second to none. We are super proud of our contribution to this vast infrastructure project.
